Type: Ghostscript built-in | ||||||||||||||||
Generic Instructions:
CUPS,
no spooler,
PPD aware applications/clients,
Important for Windows clients: The CUPS PostScript driver for Windows has a bug which makes
it choking on PPD files which contain GUI texts longer than 39 characters. Therefore it is
recommended to use Adobe's PostScript driver. If you still want to use the CUPS driver,
please mark "GUI texts limited to 39 characters" to get an appropriate PPD file.
Comments
This driver is available in the Ghostscript Printer Application
Martin Lottermoser's general-purpose PCL 3+ Ghostscript driver, successor of the "hpdj" driver.
It is known to work reasonably well with a wide assortment of PCL 3 inkjet printers. This driver has many options (enter the command "man gs-pcl3" in a terminal window to get more information), so you can do a lot of fine-tuning, but do not expect perfect results with the default settings. Due to being able to set so many different options separately you can even make rather exotic non-HP printers printing. To find out their options you print into a file under Windows and then apply the "pcl3opts" command (comes with the driver) on the file. It returns the Ghostscript command line which most probably prints in the mode of the printer for which your file was generated under Windows.
This patch adapts the driver to GPL/AFPL Ghostscript 8.x. In ESP Ghostscript 8.x this driver is already included.
Unfortunately, GNU Ghostscript 5.50 (and also ESP Ghostscript 5.50.1) has a bug which often causes segmentation faults when high amounts of memory are needed (high resolutions, Floyd-Steinberg dithering). A workaround is to use Ghostscript's "-dMaxBitmap=value" option with "value" being the size of memory which Ghostscript should be allowed to allocate for rendering one page. Try values of 40000000 and higher. In the foomatic config files there is the option "Memory Limit" to control this. Note that Ghostscript can take up memory up to the given amount. So be sure that you have enough swap space and note that your machine will slow down considerably during the rendering process. This problem does not appear with GNU or Alladin Ghostscript 6.x and newer.
For many printers, the gutenprint driver and the drivers from HP may produce better color output.
