Comments
For basic printing functionality use the HPIJS driver . For advanced functionality such as printer status and maintenance features, use the HPLIP driver (which includes HPIJS).

Older comments:
Works out of the box with various PCL3 drivers.
Under Linux this printer does up to 600x600dpi in colour with
CRET. To obtain this use the Gimp-Print driver (4.1.99) in 600x600
dpi, or the cdj880 or cdj970 drivers with RET turned on and
presentation quality.
The german magazine c't - Magazin fuer Computertechnik
(21/2000) recommends for the HP DeskJet 840C:
