Brother's website offers two drivers for most of their printers: LPR+CupsWrapper, or a BR-Script3 (PS Emulation) PPD. For whatever reason, the BR-Script3 PPD is not offered for download on the support page for the HL-L6400DW. For Windows and MacOS, any of Brother's drivers work fine, but for a Linux machine running a CUPS server, I found that the BR-Script3 PPD designed for the MFC-8890DW works perfectly (http://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadend.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc8890dw_all&os=128&dlid=dlf006413_000&flang=4&type3=562). I only noticed this because I replaced a Brother MFC-8890DW with this model (HL-L6400DW), and printing continued working without replacing any drivers/PPD's. On the other hand, I also noticed that just about any generic Gutenprint driver would work as well, with varying success with respect to output quality. I could not get any Foomatic drivers to work with this model, but it's possible that I was simply encountering an installation issue on my end (with Foomatic). 1) That being said, the BR-Script3 PPD offered by Brother produced the highest quality output for me, by FAR. 2) Unfortunately, the CUPS built-in Generic Postscript driver only produced a blank page upon any attempt to print, so I would mark that is NOT compatible with this printer. 3) Every CUPS Generic PCL driver (Gutenprint-based) worked for me (4, 5, 5e, and 6 XL). (NOTE: This was on an Ubuntu 16.04.3 install with CUPS v2.1.3, using IPP)

This PPD file is actually for a different model Brother printer (MFC-8890DW), but based on my experiences, the driver works fine for the HL-L6400DW as well. It leads me to believe that this BR-Script3 driver is similar for all models. I only wonder why they stopped offering this driver on the download page for the HL-L6400DW... This link is to the .DEB package - the .RPM package can be found by browsing the downloads section at this same link.
