Linux Mint 17.3: the 'printer part' is detected and installed automatically by the OS. The 'scanner part' needs to be installed using either the .deb packages found on Brother's website. For the scanner to work one has to also download and install the scanner setting file named "brother-udev-rule-typex-x.y.z-t.all.deb" where x, y, z and t are the numbers composing the version of the .deb Linux Mint 13: the 'printer part' needs to be installed using either the installation script found on Brother's website - the automatic detection and installation by the system would not work. However, I had to remove from the 'printing management center' the printer created by the installation script and let the OS detect and create its own. For the scanner to work the procedure is the same as the one described for Mint 17.3 here above.one has to also download and install the scanner setting file named "brother-udev-rule-typex-x.y.z-t.all.deb" where x, y, z and t are the numbers composing the version of the .deb I did not manage to have the 'Scan' button to work despite the specific .deb file provided on Brother's website. There might be a setting missing on the computers, e.g. what is the default program to handle scans coming from the printer. I do not know how to check which printing languages are 'spoken' by the printer.
